Hello! Welcome to the route through the history of the Battle of Vimeiro: “Walking route - Battle of Vimeiro 1808”. Fought on August 21st, 1808, this battle put an end to the First French Invasion of Portugal. The Battle of Vimeiro was fought on August 21st, 1808, between the Anglo-Portuguese army commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley, future Duke of Wellington, and the Napoleonic French army commanded by Jean Andoche Junot. This route crosses places full of historical memories, including the memorial monument of the Centenary of the Battle, the Vimeiro Church, Wellington's Headquarters, the Field Hospital, and the Statue in memory of the soldier of the Peninsular War. As we walk through the streets, some of them with names alluding to the battle, we can see the street name signs in which, both the street names and the images painted by Salvador Ferreira, allude to this historical episode. Along the way, we will also be able to see statues that represent soldiers of the time, as well as three murals.
