audio time icon0min

We are next to the Memorial Monument of the Centenary of the Battle of Vimeiro, inaugurated on August 21st, 1908, by the last king of Portugal, D. Manuel II. King D. Manuel was present with his uncle, D. Afonso, who was known in Portugal as “O Arreda”. He was one of the first Portuguese to have a car and was very fond of cars. As he drove by, as a sign to clear the way, he would shout “Arreda, Arreda” (Move! Move!). In the place where the monument stands there was once a windmill. On the day of the battle, the artillery was placed next to the windmill and, at night, the windmill served as headquarters for Colonel George Walker, commander of the British 50th Regiment. In order to build the monument, the windmill was removed and transferred to “Pito Agudo”, in Maceira, where it still stands today. The mills and stonework were taken from the old windmill.
