By the Vimeiro Church, a fight took place, which followed the one on the Vimeiro hill where the Interpretation Center is located. The Vimeiro Church was a position for the Anglo-Portuguese army, being an excellent one because at the time it was already higher and detached from the rest of the village. When the French arrived in the Church area, they were greeted with musket volleys. But Junot's men managed to get close to the enemy. The proximity was such that they could not reload their weapons. The men had to resort to bayonets. When the French retreated, the Anglo-Portuguese cavalry, commanded by Colonel Taylor, was ordered to pursue the enemy. The cavalry advanced too far into the valley and were forced to retreat after suffering heavy casualties, including Colonel Taylor himself who was killed.
