Mural Painting – The Armistice

audio time icon0min

This mural painting refers to the armistice, signed in Vimeiro on August 22, 1808. Vimeiro is the place where the battle took place, but it was also here that the first terms of the truce were signed. The day after the battle – 22nd of August – Junot sent General François Kellerman to Vimeiro to negotiate the suspension of hostilities with the British. Seeing Kellerman approaching, with a body of 1500 horsemen, they initially thought it was a new attack. The French general, acting with great cunning, managed to sign a very favorable agreement for the French. This agreement would form the basis for the final convention for the evacuation of Portugal by the French army – the Sintra Convention.
